The Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. is committed to the ideal of an open society. It promotes values-based leadership, constructive dialog between conflicting parties, and Euro-Atlantic cooperation. The Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. has dedicated itself to the creation of networks for many years, relying on its own network and the associated storage and processing of contact data. The Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. takes the protection of your data very seriously. The following privacy policy, valid from 25.5.2018, informs you about which of your data we store, what we use them for, and how you can view, edit or delete the data we have stored.

The stored data will be used exclusively in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU-DSGVO) for the aim of carrying out the Institute’s purpose as described in § 2 of the Articles of Association of the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V., and do not serve any commercial purpose.

Use of our website

When you visit our website, the browser you use automatically sends information to the server of the website. The following information is automatically stored temporarily:

Social media channels

The Aspen Institute has an online presence within social networks (Facebook, Twitter) in order to communicate with our partners, potential members and social media users and to inform them about our activities. It is worth noting that our users’ data may be processed outside of the European Union. This may result in risks to users, since this may make it harder to enforce users’ rights. Any US providers that are certified under the Privacy Shield  are committed to respecting EU privacy standards.

In addition, users’ data may be processed for market research and promotional purposes. For example, user profiles indicating interests can be created from the user’s online behavior. Integration of services and contents from third parties

In the interests of our analysis, optimization, and the operation of our online presence, we use third party content or services to integrate their content and services. Aspen network, interested parties, speakers, and participants in our events

The Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. sees itself as a platform to bring together different actors from politics, business, culture, media, and civil society at home and abroad, and participates in the debate on current relevant topics through regular events, workshops, and conferences. This requires a broad network of representatives from these areas as well as an interested public. To maintain this network, to process contact data, and to invite interested people to our events, the institute maintains a database in which the necessary data is stored. This may include the following information:

In exceptional cases, such as to prevent duplicate invitations to events organized in cooperation with partners, the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. reserves the right to share your first and last name as well as your employer with said partner organizations. However, the Institute will not share contact information or any other information with third parties unless you expressly agree. In particular, the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. will not sell or otherwise disclose personally identifiable information.

By participating in our events, you also agree that we may publish your first and last name, title, position, and current organization on participant lists during the event. For a smooth execution of the event, the participant lists may be passed on to event partners or, in justified exceptional cases, to the respective security services of the venue. In closed conference formats, we also provide the participants with short biographies as provided by you. In addition, you agree that photos and/or sound/video recordings may be taken of you during our events. These may subsequently be used by us, for example on our website, our social media channels, as well as in publications. After their approval, the first and last names, as well as, if applicable, the title and position/organization name of our speakers, possibly alongside a short biography and a photograph, will be published on the website and the social media channels of the institute.

Members of the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. or of the “Verein der Freunde des Aspen Instituts e.V.”

As a non-profit organization, the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. relies on membership fees and donations to maintain its financial independence. For the achievement of the purpose of the institute and the “Verein der Freunde des Aspen Instituts,” the administration of the memberships, and to regularly inform our members about our activities as well as to invite them to our events, it is necessary that the following data is collected and stored upon becoming a member:

  • First name, last name and, if necessary, title
  • Job title and organization name
  • Contact details (email addresses, postal addresses, telephone numbers, fax numbers and, if necessary, social media information)
  • Participation in past and future events of the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V.
  • Areas of interest and expertise (if known to us)
  • Start and end of membership as well as type of membership
  • Amount of membership fee and payment status
  • Bank details (in the case of direct debit authorization issued by you)
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality

As part of the membership, we may provide your first and last name as well as short biographies and photos that you have made available to us to other members in our member updates. For administrative purposes, member lists including name and last name, position and organization as well as type of membership can be transmitted from the employee responsible for the association to other members and to the board. However, the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. does not disclose any personal data to other third parties without the express consent.

Upon withdrawal or expulsion of the person concerned, all bank details will be deleted as soon as all due contributions are paid.


If you decide to make a donation to the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V., we will also record data from you in order to process the donation. The following personal data can be stored and used by us:

We will use this information solely for billing/issuing the donation receipt and to keep you up to date on our activities and events and to invite you to them. The Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V. will never share this data with third parties.

Third parties and data security

Our database is stored by an external service provider (Werk21) according to the valid data protection guidelines of the EU-DSGVO and is made secure according to current standards. This guarantees us the security of your data. The access to and the administration of your data lies exclusively with the employees of the Aspen Institute Deutschland e.V., which allows us to change or delete them upon request. Further information about the privacy policy of Werk21 can be found here: In addition, the personal data in our database are processed exclusively within the European Union in accordance with the EU General Data Protection Regulation (EU GDPR).

Modification or deletion of your personal data

Insofar as there are no legal obligations to store data (for example in the context of tax retention obligations under the Tax Code), personal data will be deleted if you object to their storage.
